VISTA LatinaCommittee Chair: Emma Bones Contact Information: ejbones@gatech.edu The Hispanic Tutoring Initiative is a new program that was created in order to provide an outlet for Spanish-speaking volunteers and students who are, in general, interested in supporting the Atlanta Hispanic community. It is NOT required that you know Spanish in order to tutor the students, but a general understanding or interest in the Hispanic culture does help prepare tutors for the environment in which they will be teaching. The tutoring is done in conjunction with Grace Fellowship at Midtown Community Church which will transport the Georgia Tech tutors to the Hispanic neighborhood that is located just south of the I-75/85 split. The church owns a separate building in the neighborhood where the tutoring occurs. This tutoring experience is very different from most other opportunities at Tech as you will be working in a high risk community that is in need of help and support. The children are amazing to work with, but you will be forced into a very different social situation than most Tech students have experienced before. |
