TTP: History

Techwood Tutorial Project is the oldest continuing community service program on the Georgia Tech Campus. TTP was founded in the spring of 1964 by a group of concerned students and faculty who were aware of the social and academic deficiencies of the children in the Techwood/Clark-Howell Housing Project. The housing projects were located across North Avenue adjacent to the Tech Campus. Recently the area has gone through significant change. The Olympics brought renovation and now the Centennial Place neighborhood and Centennial Place Elementary School have replaced the projects.

TTP however still holds its original purpose-to develop a program to help underprivileged children master the academic basics and instill enthusiasm towards education. Today, TTP pairs Georgia Tech students with a child from C.W. Hill Elementary School. Tech students tutor at least one hour a week during elementary school hours. TTP tutors also strive to build a friendship with their child and often act more as a mentor than strictly a tutor. To help promote the mentor aspect, TTP sponsors several expense paid outings a semester for the children and tutors. Past outings have included Sci-Trek, the Atlanta Zoo, and the Georgia Aquarium.
